Mukhyamantri Swachh Vidyalaya Puraskar (MSVP) is an ambitious program by Government of Jharkhand to improve the levels of sanitation and hygiene in schools in state. This program, developed in 2019 in partnership with UNICEF aims to compare schools according to their Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, to make the learning environment of students cleaner and healthier.
Objectives of MSVP
The primary objectives of the MSVP are:
- Recognition and Celebrate: To reward schools who have been able to ensure the schools are well maintained in regard to sanitation and hygiene standards.
- Inspiration and Motivation: To encourage other schools to embrace best practice on WASH and environmental sustainability.
- Encourage Sustainable Practices: To entice sustainable water, sanitation and hygiene practices in the schools.
- Capacity Building: To develop the capacity of school management committees and staff in finding the maintaining of hygiene and sanitation facilities.

Structure of the Award
The MSVP has been made in such a way that it identifies schools in the district and state levels divided into specifications of rural and urban schools. On the state level, there are 119 schools awarded under many categories:
- Category 1: 1- through 5 classes.
- Category 2: 1 -8 or 6-8 classes.
- Category 3: Schools with classes 1- 10, 1- 12, 6- 12 or 9- 12.
- Special Category Schools: these schools are residential and also the privately situated schools.
There is a given number of awards under each category and 119 schools receive the recognition.
Evaluation Criteria
Schools are assessed using a fine range of criteria with all having different weight ages:
- Water: 22 points
- Toilet Facilities: 28 points
- Handwashing with Soap: 20 points
- Operations and Maintenance: 15 points
- Behavior Change and Capacity Building: 15 points
These criteria provide holiness in analyzing the sanitation and hygiene practices in a school.
Implementation and Support
The deployment of the MSVP entwpms teamwork:
- Government Support: The awards are financially supported by the state government and facilitate the proper implementation of the program.
- Technical Assistance: UNICEF provides technical expertise in the formulation of evaluation tools and capacity-build programs.
- Monitoring and Evaluation: Equity and accountability Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) is the monitoring and evaluation body of the program.

Impact and Achievements
Since beginning the MSVP has resulted in great advancements in school amenity and sanitation:
- Improved WASH: Schools are now renovated and have better WAH facilities so that students can have increased access to clean water and sanitation.
- Behavioral Change: It has been observed that students and staff have shown a change with regard to the level to which cleanliness and hygiene practices are taken.
- Community Engagement: The program has an increase in the community participation in ensuring school hygienic conditions.
Challenges and Way Forward
Regardless of the accomplishments, the MSVP does have some threats:
- Limitation of infrastructures: There are still schools which have no proper sanitation facilities and are especially working in remote regions.
- Sustainability: The sustainability of the facilities is an issue of concern in WASH.
- Awareness: There should be sedied awareness with regards to Height Hair Cleaning.
So as to overcome these challenges, the government will:
- Increase Funding: Invest additional funding in the perpetration and upkeep of sanitation.
- Capacity Building: Improve the school staff and management committees training.
