On July 2, 1937, Amelia Earhart hopped on a plane intending to circumnavigate the world, made an eerie last message over the radio, then disappeared somewhere over the Pacific Ocean. She was declared dead two years later, on January 5, 1939. Her case remains unsolved because both her and her aircraft have never been located.
D.B. Cooper
On November 24, 1971, a man named Dan Cooper (an alias; also known as D.B. Cooper) boarded a Boeing 727 bound for Seattle, Washington. He flagged down a flight attendant after he settled into his seat and he showed her his suitcase which contained a bomb while he demanded $200,000 in cash and four parachutes. Dan Cooper jumped into the void from the aft staircase while the pilots followed his specific instructions about speed and route. The circumstances of his disappearance and his true identity remain unknown to people at present.
Solomon Northup
Solomon Northup who was born free in America accepted a traveling musician position in 1841 but was then abducted and sold into slavery after he was drugged. He spent 12 years in slavery until he encountered Canadian abolitionist Samuel Bass who assisted him in achieving his freedom. After returning to his home in New York, he published his memoir Twelve Years a Slave and delivered multiple speeches before vanishing from the historical record in 1857. The 1863 letter reported him to be alive but no information about his remaining life or death has been recorded.
In 1975, American labor union leader Jimmy Hoffa vanished without explanation. The authorities declared him dead after five years in 1982. The widely held belief about Hoffa's death states that Mafia members killed him because of his supposed connections to organized crime yet his remains have never been discovered.
Michael Rockefeller
Michael Rockefeller who was born to New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller and became US Vice President later on was an intelligent student who earned his history and economics degree from Harvard University. The dugout canoe he was using with an anthropologist companion overturned on November 17 1961 during his time in the Asmat region which is located in southwestern Dutch New Guinea. He swam toward the shore but people never saw him again after that point. Theories of his disappearance range from drowning to being killed and eaten by villagers but no physical proof of his death has ever been released or found.
Liu Huijun
In 2008, a 37-year-old Taiwanese woman and her four-year-old daughter went missing on the 11th floor of a finance building. The two people who disappeared from the building left behind only their two red coats and their shoes. The security cameras which covered all building areas and entry points failed to show their path. The two people vanished from sight and their disappearance created an impression of instant vanishing.
Lars Mittank
Lars Mittank traveled to Bulgaria with friends on June 30, 2014 for his first international trip which marked his first experience outside Germany. The group enjoyed a peaceful vacation until Mittank fought with another person on July 6 which caused him to suffer a ruptured eardrum. He chose to stay in Bulgaria because his friends wanted to stay with him but he refused their company.
He showed unusual behavior after his friends departed which included paranoid thoughts and a phone call to his mother in which he expressed fears about being robbed or killed. His irregular conduct persisted at Varna Airport after he intended to return home on July 8 which prompted him to flee the airport building into a forested area after an airport doctor started to examine him. The person has not been seen since that time.
Theodosia Burr Alston
The disappearance of Theodosia Burr Alston, daughter of former US Vice President Aaron Burr, in 1813 is a longstanding mystery. The story goes that after she became the First Lady of South Carolina after her husband was sworn in as the governor during the War of 1812, she made plans to visit her father that December and boarded a schooner ship, Patriot. The ship remained missing for several weeks because its scheduled arrival time passed without any communication from the crew members.
Owen Parfitt
The disappearance of Owen Parfitt remains an unsettling mystery which has not achieved widespread recognition. His sister and a young woman transported him to his front porch chair which he used as his normal seat. They returned outside to retrieve him after the weather began to deteriorate but they found him missing. The neighbors and nearby farmers did not observe or detect any strange occurrences. The search efforts to find him failed to discover any trace of him. He disappeared from existence as if he had never existed.
